Construction and history

Tughlaqabad Fort was built between 1321-1325 by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. It took about 4 years to build it.

A large number of laborers were employed in the construction of this fort, but the exact number is unknown. It is said that thousands of laborers worked day and night to build this fort. There is no historically accurate information about the total cost of construction, but it was a grand and expensive project of that time.

Why was it built?

  1. For protection: Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq built it to protect his empire from the Mongol invasion.

    Military strategy: The fort was surrounded by strong fortifications, high walls and deep moats, making it considered an invincible fort.

    New capital: Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq wanted to make it his capital, but it was later deserted.

Reasons for the fort being deserted

 According to folklore, there was a dispute between Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya and Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. The saint cursed the fort to be deserted, after which the fort was never fully inhabited.
