Introduction
Jahaz Mahal is a beautiful historical monument in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is also called the “Ship Palace” because it looks like a floating ship when seen from a distance. This structure was built during the rule of the Delhi Sultanate. The palace is surrounded by water on both sides, making it a unique and attractive site.
Why Was Jahaz Mahal Built?
Jahaz Mahal was built for the comfort and pleasure of the sultans. It was mainly used as a retreat for the royal women. The palace had space for hundreds of women, including queens, maids, and dancers. It also served as a summer palace because of its cooling effect due to the surrounding water.
Cost and Labor
There is no exact record of the cost of construction, but building such a grand structure required a large amount of money. Many skilled workers, including architects, masons, and laborers, worked on this project. The materials used were mainly stone, lime mortar, and plaster, which were commonly used in that period.
Time Taken to Build
The construction of Jahaz Mahal took several years. It was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries during the rule of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji. Since it was a grand palace with beautiful designs and water structures, it required a long time to complete.
